2023 Annual General Meeting

All Stroll of Poets members are cordially invited to attend our 2023 AGM and obtain the first release of our popular anthology. The event will take place on Sunday, March 19, 2023. Registration starts at 1:30 pm with the meeting starting at 2:00 pm.

This year we are excited to be returning to an in person meeting at the Stanley Milner Library, #7 Sir Winston Churchill Square for our AGM and anthology launch. It will be upstairs in the Learning Loft 2. When you arrive, please proceed to the Customer service desk where a security guard will accompany you up to the sixth floor as it is a private floor and there’s no public access.

We’ll provide coffee, tea and a light snack. The best option for parking is the parkade under the library. Hopefully you’ll be able to join us as it’s certain to be a wonderful afternoon.

Membership renewals and donations to the Stroll will also be accepted that day.

Please see the Stroll weekly newsletter for links to the AGM Package.

Call for Submissions: Indigenous Land Acknowledgements

The Stroll of Poets is compiling a book of Indigenous Land Acknowledgements written by its members.  You have heard some of them over the past two years at Haven meetings.  Perhaps you have written and spoken one yourself.

We’re looking for Land Acknowledgements with a personal or poetic flair.  Too many public events and meetings now begin with an Acknowledgement that sounds rote, boring and insincere.  We know that our members have written original, sincere, and personal Acknowledgements that truly move people.  These compositions provide a meaningful beginning to our meetings.

The title of the anthology is: As Long as the Sun Walks Across the Sky:  Poets Acknowledge Indigenous Lands.  We hope to reach a readership of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, with a purpose of empowering both readerships.  Our goal is to make the exercise of Land Acknowledgements at public meetings and events more meaningful—a genuine contribution to Reconciliation.  We see potential readerships in government, education, non-profit, religious, and corporate settings.

Please decide to contribute your own original Land Acknowledgement(s) for consideration in this anthology.  Our Anthology Committee will consider all entrants for possible inclusion in the book.  Income from the book’s sales will be shared 50-50 between an Indigenous-serving group and The Stroll.

To be considered for the collection, please see the linked Suggested Considerations for a Land Acknowledgement, and these Land Acknowledgement Samples. Additional information can be found in 10 Facts About Treaty 6.

Guidelines:

  • Forward a copy of  your Acknowledgement to Leslie Dawson at lesliestroll55@gmail.com.
  • Please use Word format, 12-point Times Roman font, and entitle your submission:  “Land Acknowledgement” with your name at the end.
  • Submissions should be a maximum of 750 words, and can be poetry or prose.
  • As well, include your contact information and a brief bio of up to 65 words.

The deadline for making submissions is 1 April, 2023.
